Studio Colombia ART & EAT
“If you’re looking for an authentic experience of Colombian culture and food, look no further. As a non-artist the draw for me was the varied and interesting itinerary – many off the beaten track of usual tourist sites. The diverse culinary and cultural experiences made it perfect”! (R. Gallo, Ottawa, Canada, Art Workshop in South America – Studio Colombia Art & Eat 2019)

Art Workshop in South America
A unique art and food workshop on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia. It is indeed, the perfect winter getaway in South America. Eight full days learning the fundamentals of perspective drawing and watercolors and tasting the best of Colombian coastal food and culture. As one of our former participants wrote “one of the best vacations ever”. Open to artists of all levels, foodies and cultural travelers.
Course Overview:
Our art workshop in South America takes place on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia (Cartagena and Barranquilla). It is a great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of perspective drawing and watercolors and to taste the best of coastal food and culture. Open to artists of all levels, foodies, lifelong learners and cultural travelers looking for an enriching and affordable experience.
Prof. Yves M. Larocque, our art instructor in Colombia, will provide you with exercises that will help sharpen your visual perception of various perspective drawing components: horizon line, vanishing points, basic proportions, etc. You will also learn the dos and the don’ts of watercolors, a tricky medium. On the food side, we offer cooking demonstrations by local chefs, a street food tour and visits to local markets. Since Mónica Márquez, our food activity facilitator was born in the Colombian Coast, she knows all the ins and outs of this region. After an art class, you can have a Mojarra con arroz con coco accompanied by a cold Colombian beer on the beach. Or just wander through the cobblestone streets and squares of the beautiful old city of Cartagena (Unesco’s world cultural heritage). What can you ask more of a cultural winter holiday in South America?
During the first four nights at the small historical town of Puerto Colombia (25-minute ride from Barranquilla), we stay in a charming seafront cabaña type hotel with air-conditioned rooms and private bathrooms. The hotel runs a very good typical food restaurant. While in Cartagena, we stay four nights at a four-star hotel in Bocagrande (El Laguito sector) a lively neighborhood full of restaurants, bars, and shops. The seafront hotel has a large swimming pool and a restaurant. It is just a ten-minute ride from the Old City.
Participants need to fly to Barranquilla and return from Cartagena. We suggest arriving the day before the workshop starts, so you can make the most of your art workshop in South America.
