Biography

London, Ontario artist Sarah Cowling paints with acrylics. Her painting is a introspective and philosophical reflection of her own memories of past experiences. Sarah’s approach to the figurative is personal, rich in colour and texture and unexpected. A sense of humour and a free direct brush stroke generate a compelling narrative.

Sarah has a B.A. in history and Classical Studies, and a B. Ed. For more than twenty years, Sarah has been exploring and developing her art by painting daily in the studio. She has shown her art in a variety of local exhibitions and galleries and has participated in the London Artists Studio Tour since 2016.

Statement

Do you remember your first kiss? What an experience! But often that first experience ends in grief. The memories of that first kiss and subsequent events inspired me to create this series of paintings. The kiss did not evolve into true love for the subject; instead, she travels through many stages or responses to the grief of losing her first love.

I deliberately chose colours that reflect the mood and vulnerability of the subject. The paint is put on the paper in a raw and textural manner, working as an abstraction of the memories and of the figure.

I hope that my viewers will find the emotions I have portrayed are familiar and found in their hearts.
